Hi, I’m Amanda, the founder and fabric forager behind Glass City Quilt Co., a small but mighty quilting shop based in Sylvania, Ohio.
For the past eight years, quilting has been where my design background, love of color, and curiosity all come together. I started as a graphic designer, but quilting quickly became the place where my creativity felt most at home. It’s a meditative kind of making—quiet, focused, and deeply satisfying.
It began with fabric, of course. But not just the crisp bolts lined up at the shop. What really drew me in were the worn-in pieces with stories—old sheets, soft dress shirts, and forgotten cottons tucked away in closets or thrift store bins. I became fascinated by the way quilters of the past used whatever they had on hand. They didn’t wait for perfect materials. They made do, and made beauty.
That sense of resourcefulness stuck with me. It wasn’t just about saving money. Reclaiming fabric became a way to care for myself while creating something useful and lasting. I started pulling fabric from my own home, then expanded my search to garage sales and estate sales, collecting pieces that had lived other lives.
Over time, my stash grew into a blend of reclaimed gems and modern designer prints. And with it, a quiet idea started to take shape.
The Beginning of Glass City Quilt Co.
Like many quilters, I looked up to the women building bold, creative businesses in this space. Makers like Suzy from Suzy Quilts, Erica from Kitchen Table Quilting, Emily from Quilty Love, Megan from Then Came June, Taylor from Toad & Sew, and Tara from Full Moon Fabrics. Their work felt fresh and fearless. I admired it deeply.
For a long time, quilting was something I played with. Something I loved. But slowly, I began to see that it could be more. That I could take this hobby I found joy in and shape it into something with direction, with purpose.
A big part of that was ChatGPT. What started as a simple tool turned into something more—a planner, a creative partner, and a steady nudge forward. It helped me shape ideas, set goals, and move from dreaming to doing. With that support, and the inspiration of the women who came before me, Glass City Quilt Co. came to life.
What We Make and Why
Glass City Quilt Co. started with a simple question: what if reclaimed fabric came already washed, cut, and ready to sew?
Thrifting for fabric is a joy. It’s treasure hunting, full of possibility. But it’s also time-consuming. There’s digging, sorting, washing, pressing—each step a project in itself. One day, I thought, I’d love it if someone else did this part for me. Then I realized, maybe I could be that person for someone else.
That’s how it started: curated bundles of reclaimed fabric. Thoughtfully selected. Prepped and packaged for makers who want the charm without the time sink.
But it didn’t stop there. I also happen to love tech. (Yes, I’m a quilting nerd who codes.) I started building digital tools to help with quilt math and project planning. First came an HST calculator, with more tools on the way.
To complement the reclaimed side of the shop, I stock eco-friendly basics—organic cotton solids, tone-on-tones, and low-volume blenders that mix beautifully with vintage finds. These come from trusted suppliers like Cloud9 Fabrics, companies who share our commitment to sustainability and quality.
